Yes you have choices: Your doctors can keep you awake or give you mild sedation with a tranquilizer as per your wishes and still be able to do the procedure which is not particularly painful. The doctor needs you to be relaxed as the colonoscope tube has to be inserted when your muscles of the bottom area are relaxed, otherwise it may be hard to insert the tube in your rectum which is guarded by a tight Anal sphincter.
