40 weeks: Normal pregnancies are 40 weeks long, counting from the beginning of the Last Menstrual Period (LMP) prior to conception. (That means pregnancies are 38 weeks long, if counting from the time of conception.) The standard way of counting is from the LMP, so that's why pregnancies are 40 weeks long. A baby is born premature if only at 36 weeks; so wait until 40 weeks unless there is a problem.
