It is a great tool.: As a recovering physician who treats addiction, i used to be all about the steps. But opioid dependence kills many young people. Suboxone has unique properties that eliminate the obsession to use opioids, allowing patients on it to feel normal. The best view is to see it as a 'remission agent'. As for money, if it was a great deal for docs, there wouldn't be a shortage of prescribers.

Suboxone Awareness: Like methadone, Suboxone prevents withdrawal. It does so because it is an opiate like heroin or prescription pain killers. Unlike those drugs, Suboxone allows you to function in society. Physicians prescribing Suboxone have little alternative for patients who do not want to go through detox. But, realize that once on Suboxone there is no easy withdrawal. It is as addicting as the drugs it replaced.

Suboxone: Helps opioid addicts by blocking many of the withdrawal symptoms, making this process less uncomfortable, and easier to go through - one of the fears of opioid addicts. The dose is tapered over a number of days. Long term use of suboxone, such as maintenance is substituting one addiction for another.

It does help: Suboxone prevents withdrawal symptoms caused by stopping other opiate-type narcotics. It also controls the cravings and compulsions to use any opioids. Suboxone treatment is to stabilize the person with opioid addiction, physically, psychologically and socially. The patient with our support moves on with life and succeeds in a healthy relationship, good job or completing education.

It helps: I strongly doubt that suboxone is more expensive than whatever drug you were using before. No medication, whether suboxone, methadone or naltrexone, is going to do its full job without a counseling program. Drug addiction does not happen only because of exposure to the drug. Tens of millions of people are treated with opioids, yet a small percent develop addiction. Some get abstinent, others not.
