Rarely happens: The infection in the middle ear feeds on sugary mucous created within that confined space. When it runs out of food it can self heal. It is not like a cellulitis in you skin that is fed by tissue serum & just extends its reach to get more. Your body will give you signs when things aren't going well. Increasing pain, fatigue, confusion, fever, etc.
