We have just been informed that a child at our son's (2 years old) school has the coxsackie virus. should we be concerned?

Not particularly: This is one of many gut viruses that are associated with a variety of symptoms including fever, vomiting, diarrhea and skin rash. A 2 yo is expected to get something like this an average of 2-3X/yr. It is not one of the scary germs but can be inconvenient.
