Expected: Coughing is a protective reflex that allows the lung to bring mucous or debris up from its deeper airways. Studies have shown most cough/cold preparations do nothing for kids under 6 to the point it has not been recommended in the US for more than a decade. Mucous cutting agents containing guiafenisin may loosen & help but not stop a cough. It stops when there is no more debris.
