How common is it to be put on insulin when you are first diagnosed with diabetes?

Yes: If the blood sugar is very high when someone is first diagnosed with dm then often pills will not work and Insulin is needed to bring the blood sugar down initially. If a pt is type 2 they may be able to come off insulin, if type 1 only Insulin is indicated for treatment.
