have spotty periods with small black blood clots. brown spotting also occurs on first day of period. what causes this?

Menstrual blood: The color of menstrual blood is not usually important. Blood goes from red to brown to black as it gets exposed to Oxygen. If you are not satisfied with the level of menstrual cycle control that you have consider starting birth control to regulate your cycles.
