A member asked:

Is there a reason ionizing radiation causes cancer decades later and not right away?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Cancer progression: Cancer is the result of the accumulation of many different genetic mutations, each of which gives a growth advantage to a clone of cells. It's a basic error to think of it as one would an infection -- cancer development is not a single event. This is a very good question and an opportunity clear up a common misunderstanding.
