Odd statement: A 6 wk old has not developed the muscle control to reach her ears on purpose or hold them. They cry for many reasons. Most often to be held. Sounds like yo are confused & could use a doc visit to sort out the issues.

Time to see doctor: Any baby less than 3 months old who is "crying inconsolably" could have a serious illness. Sometimes it is not a serious illness, but the only way to tell is for the parents to talk with the baby's pediatrician. For babies under a month old, an exam is needed right away (a newborn goes to the ER if doctor unavailable). Also, most 1-3 month-olds will need an urgent exam for nonstop crying.
