Dr. can check throat: New throat and tongue symptoms can be from strep throat (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees the doctor if symptoms are bothersome, recurrent, or don't go away quickly (mainly to check for a treatable infection). Throat lozenges and ibuprofen can lessen pain temporarily.
