I've been taking 500mg of valerian root for a few weeks. should i consult my physician to taper off of it? or is it okay to just stop using it.

OK to just stop but:: Unfortunately it's likely your physician knows little or nothing about valerian as docs aren't taught about herbs in med school. Usually there are no withdrawal symptoms from valerian though they've been reported rarely in those taking it for many months. It should be fine to just stop; if any withdrawal symptoms, resume it, then taper. See http://www.umm.edu/health/medical/altmed/herb/valerian

Either way.: Tapering is usually the best way to go, but I have never had anyone have a problem stopping valarian root without tapering.
