High FBC: The FBC (or CBC in the US) is not used to diagnose infection, but it helpful if we are concerned about bacterial vs viral infections. Respiratory infections can be caused by bacteria or viruses. Bacterial infections require antibiotics like amoxicillin while viral infections do not. It seems your physician felt your constellation of symptoms were more consistent with a bacterial infection.
