I got the flu shot wednesday. i have noticed that i now have a painful lump under my arm that wasn't there until i got the shot. is this a common side effect of the flu shot?

Uncommon not harmful: It's not a common side effect, but it probably indeed is due to inflammation from the immunization. In a way, this is good: it indicates your immune system is responding and you should be well protected from influenza. It should clear up soon, but return to your doctor, or wherever you were vaccinated, if severe, any fever, or if pain continues more than a few days.
