A member asked:

Can bad breath come from your tongue or between teeth below the gumline?

Both: Breath odor can be from the tongue due to a fungal infection, or from between the teeth beneath the gums due to a periodontal infection. You can begin by brushing your tongue vigorously, and flossing. It may bleed and seem to get worse before it gets better but hang in there! then, definitely make an appointment with your dentist.

Bad breath: It can come from both, and from tonsils or acid reflux.

Both: Tongue should be scraped daily to avoid bacterial colonization of your tongue surface. Teeth should be clean to prevent bacterial invasion of your gum causing gingivitis and bleeding gum (usually between teeth). Blood breaks down and produces variable sulfur compound (vsc) and results in bad smell (bad breath).
