No heart beat: If there was a heart beat seen previously and now a heart beat is not seen then one can feel confident in diagnosing a miscarriage. Checking a BHCG is not useful if the doctor was able to visualize a heart beat previously and now one is no longer present. The BHCG might rise, fall or stay the same and would not be useful. A lack of a fetal heart rate is definitive
