Chronic: Acute bacterial or viral pneumonia usually will heal without irritation or thickening of the pleura (lining between the lung and the chest wall), but if the infection reaches into the pleural space, that can lead to thickening. Anything that gets into the pleural space can cause pleural thickening, from blood (hemothorax) to asbestos, TB, or after a heart operation that opens up the pleural space
