It is not uncommon: to develop a pleural effusion in the area of a pneumonia.

Many , indeed: most pneumonia which involve a whole lobe of the lung is ACCOMPANIED by a PLEURAL EFFUSION ( which is simply a RESPONSE of the inner LINING of the chest cavity to INFLAMMATION and or INFECTION! They often go together! Hope this is helpful! Dr Z
