A member asked:

I am a well controlled type 2- 57 year old male diabetic with an a1c of 5.9....my creatinine is 1.4 and bun 21...should i see a nephrologist?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Any proteinuria?: Serum creatinine and urine test for protein are two basic tests of kidney function. Your creatinine seems fine but you have not stated the result of a urine test. It would be useful to see a nephrologist for a baseline evaluation and get expert advice about taking care of your kidneys. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Practice safe sex, if you have sex.
