Haemoptysis: Is blood in the sputum (phlegm) and has a variety of causes from the less serious bronchitis to the more serious pneumonia and some other lung and heart conditions. An urgent doctor examination of the chest is required as this will help sort out whether likely serious or not and if the cause remains unclear the doctor can arrange tests such as chest X-ray to help sort it out.
