Some thoughts...: A lab test (such as a blood test) is needed if one wants to differentiate Herpes simplex 1 from 2. A person can catch HSV 1, or 2, or both, because having one of them does not protect him from the other. The location of the lesions does not confirm the Herpes type, because type 1 can sometimes be genital, and type 2 can sometimes be oral. Herpes blisters break and heal up, or it may not be herpes.
