Numbness of the toes: Is your husband a diabetic? Peripheral neuropathy (numbness of the toes) is common in these patients. He should be seen by his primary doctor so the circulation can be checked to that area. He should have a physical as well if he has not had one in the last few years. Good luck and feel better!

He really needs to: be seen. Don't know if he had an injury, diabetes, circulation problem et. If the tissue is dead - this should be promptly evaluation.

Hard to say, now.: If is only two toes, it could be localized to the toe. These symptoms are best served when they have a history associated with them. This involves date of onset, medical, medications etc. To remove all doubt, be evaluated by a primary care physician first.
