Swimmers ear is an infection of the external ear. It is due to the canal being blocked off due to the infection of the walls of the ear canal. Pain with movement of the ear easily distinguishes this from an otitis media or middle ear infection. A physician needs to clean the ear canal and place a "wick" oftentimes. Sometimes you will get lymph nodes in the neck with these infections but rarely do you get fevers. The infection is very painful due to the swelling of the soft tissue within the bone of the ear canal and adjacent to it. Opioids are often needed for this pain until the infection settles down. Hope this helps.
