I have had severe abdominal pain from time to time over the last ten years. doctors have always told me its ibs. could it be a twisted colon?

Unlikely: IBS has been diagnosed for last 10 years. So it is unlikely it is twisted colon..Twisted colon or Volvulus pain is more acute associated with nausea and vomiting. It is a medical emergency

No: The colon doesn't twist, it is held in place by a variety of fibrous anchors. The small intestine can, but twisting cuts off the blood supply to the intestinal tissue. If not tended to rather quickly, it dies & leaks your poop inside & you die. If you had short periods of sudden pain followed by recovery, it might be an intermittent twist, but those are indeed rare.
