I find myself randomly coughing over the last few years in the house and even recently out in public. all of a sudden i get an itch and then have to cough. what is the problem?

Allergies?: That sounds to me like it could be an allergic cough. The itch that you describe would be evidence of a postnasal drip, where the allergic fluid leave the sinuses and drips down the back of your throat.
