Dermatologist says my infant son has developed a congenital nevus (specifically a cafe au lait spot) on his face within past few weeks. how likely will this turn into a huge, black, hairy mole? nervous! :-(

Probably low: The cafe au last probably will not become a hairy nevus but should keep an eye out for any new cafe lesions. Good news is they are laser able however the return frequency is high. If you go that route make sure to go to a dermatologist that performs a lot of these type treatments and start on a small area and wait 6 weeks to see if the spot lightens or darkens.

Not going to happen: The black hairy nevus (bathing trunk nevus) does not arise from a café au lait spot. The BHN is visible at birth in its true form. It can expand some as the kid grows, but is a separate issue from the more common café au lait spots.
