A member asked:

What causes alpha haemolytic streptoccocus to overgrow in stool test and what does this cause?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Strep overgrowth: I'm unsure as to whether this is a pathogenic situation or merely benign colonization. If you've not taken a recent course of antibiotics or if you have no intestinal symptoms, no treatment may be needed. I would refer this question to a specialist in infectious diseases or,if you're having intestinal tract symptoms, a gastroenterologist can be consulted.
