Hard to say: cannot say in your particular case, but generally, carafate changes stool It is very sticky and that will cause bile to stick to it and be brown. On the other hand, a more serious condition is bleeding into the gut which turns it dried blood color (maroon, or black. but very dark) it might be that but probably not.

Yes: dark brown stools are somewhat typical as an increased amount of bile acid is expelled. black tarry stools would be concerning for a GI bleed
