My wife had a pulmonary embolism in oct 2015. it was medically completely unprovoked. she has been using warfarin and later switched to xarelto. for how long should she continue to use xarelto and does she need to go for follow up scans at some point?

There is a 10% per: year recurrence rate of unprovoked PE. There is about a 30% risk of death associated with PE. This means that she has a 50:50 chance of recurrence in the next 5 years and a 1/3 chance of dying associated with the recurrence when it occurs. She should stay on Xarelto indefinitely. Follow up scans are not needed in the absence of symptoms.
