Ovulation as a cause: Often ovulation malfunctions can cause cysts from the corpus luteum(yellow body) which makes the second of two female hormones Progesterone or can form from the development of the ovarian folicles prior to ovulation. Abnormal cysts can form from germ cells in the ovary that suddenly begin to develop as well. Benign follicular cysts can often be suppressed by the oral contraceptive pill.
