Are nootropics safe for teenagers around the age of 16-17?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Unknown: If there are any good research studies comparing patients on a "brain-enhancing" substance vs. patients on a placebo, that show any real-life brain improvements (not outweighed by the substance's unknown or known side effects), then such a substance might be worthy of consideration. If no good human studies are done, then sales pitches and testimonials have nothing to stand on.
