A member asked:

My father passed away last year because of 4th stage esophageal cancer. i am worried each time i experience pain or feel any lumps. should i check?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Esophageal: Cancer does not generally run in families. In the us, it is most commonly in the lower part of the esophagus and is associated with a precancerous condition called barrett's esophagus. You can reduce your risk by moderating alcohol intake, maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding smoking. If you have acid reflux, make sure it is treated. If symptoms of reflux persist you may need endoscopy.
