Sometimes: Sometimes methylphenidate is used in small doses to augment the effect of antidepressants. But in higher doses it can worsen depression or anxiety. A stimulant medication can destabilize bipolar disorder. It's use is, therefore, best left in the hands of an experienced doctor in the appropriate clinical setting.

Be careful: Using a psychostimulant in a person with bipolar disorder can lead to kindling- meaning mood swings can become more intensified. Best bet: Adjust present dose of mood stabilizer first. Would be good to discuss if perhaps that his too high a dose. But please no psychostimulants- it would be unnecessary and possibly harmful polypharmacy. Take care.
