But in general, STDs are inefficiently transmitted, i.e. most exposures don't transmit even if one partner is infected. So your risk from only one event is low, even unprotected. But if this relationship continues and your partner has been with other women, you should ask him to be tested for HIV and common STDs.

Unprotected sex: Sexually transmitted diseases can, like pregnancy, be acquired after just one exposure. If your goal is to be protected, then use of condoms 100% of the time has to be in your game plan. Having your partner checked is an option, as is having yourself checked - now and again in a few months. Good luck.
