Not necessarily: It takes a bit of time to settle and the hard bit is the inflammatory process around the lump. It will take few more weeks to get better If symptoms of pain, redness, fever or feeling unwell start coming, then you would suspect that the abscess is building up again

Residual disease: Well that should be re-examined by the doctor who cut into it. If it was a surgeon, I expect they will do a proper job in re-exploring the area and taking the necessary action. It's possible the abscess arose from an infected cyst, or there could be some undrained portion that wasn't reached in the first procedure. Hopefully you can go back ASAP to get that looked at.
