Yes: It can take a while before softening up, few weeks sometimes. If you feel unwell or have fever otherwise, this might indicate presence of infection still and you might need to check it out

Not normal: It sounds like the abscess has closed and reoccurred. Antibiotics will not fix it and it will need to be drained again, sorry!
