I was subscribed lexapro 2.5mg and then taper up to 5mg for my anxiety. i was also given ativan 0.5 mg. is this safe together until the lexapro works?

Yes : It should be fine. Eventually Ativan can be tapered off once a good dose of lexapro is able to manage your symptoms . Good luck .
