Yes.: Boils are collections of pus under the surface of the skin. If they are mature, they can be lanced (drained) in the clinic. If they are not mature, options include antibiotics, warm compresses, and watchful waiting. Many boils (also called abscesses) start out as a simple folliculitis, an inflammation of a hair follicle. If your dad received neither drainage nor antibiotic, seek a 2nd opinion.
