Hernia is caused by a weakness in the local structures that are holding in your organs. Over time, the area of weakness can expand. The greatest risk in waiting to repair an inguinal hernia is that it can become incarcerated (the segment of intestine gets stuck) in the groin or scrotum.

Potentially, yes if during that time the hernia becomes incarcerated(trapped) or strangulated( bowel trapped in hernia has it’s blood supply cut off). Unless a true medical reason prevents you from proceeding, better to get advice and exam from surgeon who will be performing the hernia surgery.

Any pain in any hernia needs to be evaluated . Harsh pain with nausea is a medical emergency . But asymptomatic hernias , do not necessarily need repair. Discuss and have a plan with your Dr.

small hernias with no other symptoms usually require no treatment except avoiding sudden exertion such as heavy lifting. But if it causes discomfort or is large it is best to have it repaired. If you have no symptoms chances of complications are very low. But if you are a worrier have it fixed. You should be fine
