Infection likely : Most swellings in the gums tend to be from either an abscessed tooth, or a periodontal infection. Both require treatment from a dentist. Home remedies do not really work. Please see a dentist right away as a spreading infection can be both painful and dangerous.

Swelling: Most common cause of swelling in the oral cavity is infection, either tooth or gum. There are, however, many other possibilities. Please see your General Dentist for examination, differential diagnosis, and treatment or specialty referral. The sooner the better, infections usually do not self-cure.
