Give it 24 hrs: If you can continue to weight bear without much pain, the chances are it is a simple sprain. However inflammation sets in about 6-12 hrs post injury and if you find that you are not able to put weight on it at any stage, see a Dr. You may need an X Ray to rule out an avulsion fracture, which is when a tiny flake of bone can get pulled off with the ligament during a sprain as well

Snap,crackle and pop: Popping could be a sign that something is amiss, but not always. It is best to have your ankle evaluated to remove all doubt. In the meantime follow the RICE protocol: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. If necessary crutches may be used until advised not to.
