Swollen leg: You may have a soft tissue injury to the leg in addition to the knee. Ice and elevation should help.

Gravity : Typically, if there is swelling around the knee, gravity will push that fluid to the lower leg. Another possibility is that swelling from the knee joint will leak out the back of the knee through a Baker's cyst. Although unlikely, a blood clot has to be considered, especially if you've been immobilized. See a doctor very soon or call the one already treating you for more advice as soon as possible

Up an Down.: The tissue injury around the knee injury is probably impeding the venous return from the lower leg. Try elevating the leg to increase and ease the return of blood up the leg.
