Causes of colitis: Inflammation (infection, ischemic, ibd) of large intestine = colitis. Specifically, ischemic colitis occurs when there is decreased blood flow to the gut, due either to vasospasm (seldom recurrent) or stenosis/occlusion (frequently recurrent). Don't ignore the possibility of recurrence here--since transmural ischemia or mesenteric ischemia can be serious & often starts with "intestinal angina.
