A relative (63 yrs old) is undergoing treatment for left coronary artery stenosis and has a minor heart attack a week ago. is surgery necessary?

Probably: Without reviewing the cardiac catheterization coronary angiograms no cardiologist or cardiac surgeon can answer that question. Ask the surgeon, obviously if surgery was advised that is the proper treatment.

It depends: Surgery may not be required, but this is a serious condition. Your relative needs to talk to his or her doctor to determine the best course - whether it be medications, ptca/stenting or bypass surgery. Most coronary disease is manageable without surgery, but if indicated, it is a lifesaver. Talk to the doctor, and remember, you can get a second opinion - after all, it is your relative's life!
