Hernia possible?: Unless the process you describe is cutaneous in origin, you may be developing a hernia. Given the severity of the pain you describe, seek attention now please.

Sounding infected: A red hard lump in the groin that came out of nowhere sounds like either a skin infection or a swollen gland, reacting to something else. You should have a doctor look at it.

Hard to say: Without examining the area, as this could be a reactive lymph node or soft tissue infection like an abscess. If its really bothering you, then you should seek an in person evaluation.
