NSAIDs: An over the counter pain medication will help ease your discomfort for a short while, until you can see a dentist. There are no medications that can replace definitive dental care. You'll need to see a dentist if the tooth is infected, no matter what.

Not much: OTC nSaids (pain killers) and tooth ache drops/salves (pain killers) do not cure infection. They may temporarily dull the pain, but each time they wear off the pain level will increase as the infection increases. You need a combination of both dental treatment and antibiotics. Please do not delay. See a Dentist immediately.

Infection : You need to see a dentist and get your infection treated. This may mean antibiotics and treatment of the problem tooth. OTC medication can relieve or reduce your pain but will not cure the problem

Like a splinter...: Infection doesn't just go away; you need to remove the source. So like a splinter in your finger, medication won't really help until you remove it. While it's possible, you may not need to remove the tooth, just clean things up so it can heal.
