A member asked:

For someone npo(including meds) and needing to be on plavix (clopidogrel) because of recent stenting, what do you like to use instead of the plavix (clopidogrel)?

NPO: ...Is usually demanded b4 general anesthesia to prevent aspiration during intubation. It is difficult 4me to understand what level of danger could the patient face with Plavix (clopidogrel) and a sip of water. Yet if this is a must i would supplement it with a a chewable baby Aspirin 81mg. No water is needed and the patient would swallow the Aspirin disolved in his harmless own saliva...

Take it!: For critical meds, the benefits far outweigh the very small risk of a sip ( 5cc) of water. I always have patients take critical medications (determined individually) even when strictly npo.
