If back pain is: caused by rib pain, the pain can travel along the nerve of the rib to the front. We see this with rib bruises and fractures. Sprains or strains of the connective tissue can also cause radiating pain. Shingles can do this too although the pain may precede the appearance of the rash. Of course, any unexplained pain that persists should be checked out by a doctor.

Prob muscle spasm: A dull ache in the lower back that hurts when you move is probably a muscle spasm. Rest and heat can help the muscle relax, and over the counter anti-inflammatories can also help. See a physician if this pain is worse or different, or if you start having radiating pain, numbness, tingling or weakness of your leg, or if you have bowel or bladder incontinence.
