Yikes!!: Start by applying ice and keeping the foot elevated. Consider not walking on it until it is determined if you have indeed fractured any part of the toe. Pain, swelling and bruising are all pretty good indicators of fracturing. To remove all doubt, have the toe x-rayed and the question will be answered. The results will then guide the appropriate treatment.
