A member asked:

Does a speculum have to be used in order to test for yeast infection, bv, etc.? if one is a virgin is there other ways to test without using that?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Speculum: A speculum is used to visualize the cervix for visual inspection and to take samples for pap smear, HPV and sample if pus is draining from the cervix. Smaller speculum are used for virgins. Gonorrhea and chlamydia can be diagnosed via a urine specimen. BV , trichomonas and yeast infection can be diagnosed using a swab of vaginal secretions. Discuss with your doctor if speculum exam is necessary
